MAR, 2012 SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Do It Live Productions contributes Sam Shepard’s SUICIDE IN B FLAT to Boxcar Theater’s season of “Shep in Rep” this March.  Invited by Boxcar to direct a ‘Shep’ staged reading for their ‘Young Director’s Program,’ Do It Live Artistic Director Will Hand chooses instead to fully stage Shepard’s jazz-riddled absurdist farce which will continue its run at Stagewerx for three weekends after closing at Boxcar.

Two detectives arrive at the scene of the crime to reconstruct the suicide of jazz-man Niles. Maybe they get into his head a little too well, because its not long before these hard-nosed Republican dicks are on the razor’s edge themselves. They’re already in over their heads when the room starts to fill with musicians, dead-set on rehearsing with Niles.

DO IT LIVE'S production embraces this chaos with the help of Grayson Converse, acclaimed jazz pianist making his theatrical debut by improvising the play's score each night. Hand creates two distinct worlds: one of grueling physical intensity, whose rowdy detectives start the show dripping grease, and another where jazz musicians enter forever unable to escape the rain. This physicality set to improvisation is one of the many juxtapositions this production adds to Shepard’s apoplectic and epileptic landscape of detectives and jazz musicians.

In light of Boxcar’s Shep in Rep, director William Hand finds B FLAT a perfect fit. “SUICIDE is about Shepard yearning to kill off certain parts of himself, clearing the way for his ‘Daddy Daddy’ family plays.” But that isn’t what got Hand interested in the play. “Its about people who need facts in order to stay sane. When they don't have any facts to go on, these detectives realize that their 'calling' has stopped calling, and everything goes dancing out the window. Nothing can remind you of that more than the bright spark of a jazz musician. They’re chilling. I get nervous around them.”
